# How to Review Student Writing Submissions in Puddin

> Navigate submitted assignments, read the final document, and explore the writing process summary, activity timeline, and paste event log for each student.

When a student submits an assignment, Puddin seals their writing record and makes the full submission available for your review. You can read the final document alongside a structured view of how it was created — including the activity timeline, paste events, revision history, and writing speed data. This gives you the context to assess authorship with confidence.

## Open a submission

<Steps>
  <Step title="Navigate to the assignment">
    From your dashboard, go to **Assignments** and select the relevant assignment. The assignment page shows a list of all enrolled students alongside their submission status (**Not Started**, **In Progress**, **Submitted**).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Select a student submission">
    Click on a student's name or their **Submitted** status badge to open their submission. Students who have not yet submitted show an **In Progress** or **Not Started** indicator — you can view their partial writing record at any time without disrupting their session.

    <Note>
      Viewing an in-progress submission does not notify the student and does not affect their writing session. The record is read-only from your side.
    </Note>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Read the final document">
    The submission opens on the **Document** tab, showing the final text exactly as the student submitted it. Use this panel as you would any document — read through the content, make notes, and assess the work on its own terms before exploring the process record.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open the writing process summary">
    Click the **Process Summary** tab to see a high-level overview of the authorship evidence Puddin captured. The summary includes:

    * Total active writing time across all sessions
    * Number of sessions and session dates
    * Word count growth over time
    * Paste events count and total pasted characters
    * Revision and deletion activity
    * Average writing speed

    <Tip>
      Use the Process Summary as a quick orientation before diving into the detailed panels. It surfaces the most significant signals at a glance.
    </Tip>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Explore the timeline view">
    The **Timeline** tab displays the full document creation history as a scrollable, chronological record. Each event — typing bursts, pastes, deletions, pauses, and session breaks — is represented as a distinct marker. Click any event to jump to that point in the document's development and see the exact state of the text at that moment.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Navigate the review panels">
    Use the tab bar across the top of the submission view to move between the detailed review panels:

    | Panel               | What it shows                                          |
    | ------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
    | **Document** | The final submitted text. |
    | **Process Summary** | High-level authorship evidence overview.               |
    | **Timeline**        | Chronological event-by-event document history.         |
    | **Activity** | Keystroke patterns, writing speed, and pause data. |
    | **Paste Events** | Every paste action — what was pasted, where, and when. |
    | **Revisions** | A log of all edits, deletions, and rewrites. |
    | **Sessions** | Start and end times for each writing session. |
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Understanding submission status flags

Puddin may surface automatic flags on a submission to draw your attention to signals worth reviewing. These are informational — they do not constitute findings or conclusions.

<CardGroup cols={2}>
  <Card title="High paste volume" icon="clipboard">
    A significant proportion of the document's content was entered via paste events rather than typed directly. Review the Paste Events panel for full context.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Non-linear writing" icon="shuffle">
    Large sections of text appeared in positions other than the end of the document, suggesting text was inserted mid-document or reorganised significantly.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Single session" icon="clock">
    The entire document was written in a single continuous session. Combined with other signals, this may be worth exploring — or it may simply reflect a focused student.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Long pauses" icon="pause">
    One or more extended pauses were recorded during the writing session. The Pauses view shows the exact duration and position in the document at which they occurred.
  </Card>
</CardGroup>

<Warning>
  Flags are based on writing pattern data and should always be interpreted in context. A flagged submission is not evidence of academic misconduct — many flags have straightforward explanations. Use the full process record to inform your assessment.
</Warning>

## Adding reviewer notes

While reviewing a submission, you can attach notes to any point in the timeline or to the submission overall. Click **Add Note** in the review panel toolbar and type your observation. Notes are private to teachers and reviewers — students cannot see them.

To share a submission with a colleague for a second opinion, use the **Share Submission** button to generate a secure, read-only link. The recipient can view all panels and the process record without needing a Puddin account.
