You’ve received an invitation to complete your personal statement through Puddin, a platform your university uses to support its admissions process. This page explains what Puddin is, what it records while you write, and how to get the most out of the writing environment. Read through this before you start so you know exactly what to expect.

What is Puddin?

Puddin is a writing platform that helps universities understand how personal statements are written. When you write your personal statement in Puddin, the platform captures a record of your writing process — things like how you type, how you revise your work, and how your document develops over time. This gives your university a fuller picture of your authorship alongside the finished essay. Puddin focuses on how your document was created, not just what it says — it captures your writing process, not a snapshot of the finished text.

What Puddin records during your writing session

While you write in Puddin, the following activity is captured:
Puddin only captures activity that takes place within the Puddin writing environment. It does not access your device, browser history, clipboard content outside of paste events, or any other application.

Preparing to write

You’ll get the best experience in Puddin if you write your personal statement directly in the platform rather than composing it elsewhere and copying it in. This gives reviewers the most complete record of your writing process. Here are a few tips to help you get started:
  • Use a reliable internet connection. Puddin saves your work automatically, but a stable connection makes the experience smoother.
  • Use a modern browser. Puddin works best in the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.
  • Set aside uninterrupted writing time. You can save and return across multiple sessions, but writing in focused sessions helps you produce your best work.
  • Write in your own words. Your personal statement is an opportunity to show the university who you are. Write as you would naturally — Puddin is here to support that process, not to test you.
You are welcome to do research, gather ideas, or plan your statement before you open Puddin. The platform captures what happens in the writing environment; it doesn’t require you to do all your thinking there.

Taking breaks and returning to your work

You do not need to complete your personal statement in a single sitting. Puddin saves your progress automatically every few seconds. To take a break:
  1. You can simply close the browser tab. Your work is saved.
  2. When you’re ready to continue, open the invitation email and click the link, or log in to Puddin directly if you’ve already created an account.
  3. Your statement will be exactly as you left it, and your new session will be recorded alongside your previous ones.
Make sure you note your submission deadline. Once the deadline passes, the submission window closes and you will no longer be able to write or submit. Your deadline is shown at the top of the Puddin writing environment and in your invitation email.

If you lose your connection

If your internet connection drops while you’re writing:
  • Puddin will display a connection warning at the top of the screen.
  • Any writing you’ve done since the last auto-save will be highlighted and queued for upload.
  • Once your connection is restored, Puddin will sync your work automatically. You don’t need to do anything.
  • If you close the browser before your connection is restored, the queued changes may be lost. Wait for the sync confirmation before closing if possible.
